Mechanical Properties of Glass-Ceramics

Abstract
10-009 Francisco C. Serbena Serbena, F.C.(State University of Ponta Grossa); Zanotto, E.D.(Federal University of Sao Carlos); Controlled crystallization leads to nano or microstructures that often result in substantial improvement of the mechanical properties of glass-ceramics when compared to those of the parent glasses. In this talk we critically review the main reported results regarding hardness, fracture strength and toughness of commercial and experimental glass-ceramics, and their relationships with the nano or microstructure. The effects of volume fraction crystallized and crystal size will be thoroughly discussed and associated to the main mechanisms responsible for strengthening and toughening in glass-ceramics.
