Mechanical Properties of Spark Plasma Sintered Aluminum Nitride Ceramics

Abstract
09-033 Toshiyuki Nishimura Nishimura, T.(National Institute for Materials Science); Spark plasma sintering (SPS) of aluminum nitride ceramics has been reported recently, and effect of sintering additives was investigated. Dense ceramics are obtained without additives by SPS, though aluminum nitride ceramics are usually sintered with sintering additives. Sintering by SPS and mechanical properties of aluminum nitride ceramics without additives are investigated. Commercial sub-micron powder (E grade, Tokuyama, Japan) was densified by SPS (SPS1030, Sumitomo Coal Mining, Japan). Sub-micron powder could be sintered at 1700 °C. The mechanical properties are reported in the presentation.
