Effects of the calcination temperature on the structural properties of MFe2O4 (M = Co, Ni) ferrites by a proteic sol-gel method

08-057 Jakeline Raiane Dora dos Santos Ferreira, L.d.(Universidade Federal da Paraíba); Grilo, J.P.(Universidade de Aveiro); Morales, M.A.(UFRN); Macedo, D.A.(Universidade Federal da Paraíba); Santos, J.R.(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte); Silva, T.R.(Universidade Federal da Paraíba); This study reports the effects of the calcination temperature on the structural properties of MFe2O4 (M = Co, Ni) ferrites synthesized by a proteic sol-gel method using gelatin as chelating and polymerizing agent. The as prepared powders were calcined from 673 to 1273 K for 4 h in air. Structural studies were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinement of the XRD data. The results indicated the formation of single phase spinel-type structures after calcination above 1073 K. The theoretical density (?) and hopping length between tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the ferrites are, respectively, inversely and directly proportional to their lattice parameters. The overall results showed that calcination temperature affects phase purity and cation redistribution, suggesting the possibility of controlling magnetic properties by structural design.
