Abstract
11-014 Peter Klaus Frolow Frolow, P.K.(P-D Refractories GmbH); The energy consumption for the manufacture of glass materials is particularly high. Beyond the significant contribution to production costs, there is the environmental impact of emissions. Following theoretical and experimental research and industrial scale field tests P-D Refractories GmbH has developed and successfully introduced a new type of super duty silica refractory material used for the construction of glass furnace crowns and superstructures. This so-called EPSILON SOLUTION lining concept enables substantial energy savings and emission reductions by improved radiation heat transfer to the glass melt, which is achieved through the combination of increased emissivity of EPSILON silica and optimized hot face surface contour. Glass Service A.s. results of mathematical furnace modelling and computer simulations considering spectral emissions of banded and continuous thermal radiation from luminous and non-luminuous flames validated this remarkable EPSILON effect. The heat flux to the glass melt is increased, and simultaneously radiative cooling reduces the crown temperature. The fundamental properties of super duty silica remain unchanged. The industrial performance of EPSILON SOLUTION in container, float and fiber glass furnaces is being monitored to provide data on long-term attainments since 2016. Results are consistently positive.
