Microstructured and Nanostructured Diamond for Medical Applications

02-058 Roger J Narayan Narayan, R.J.(UNC/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering); Over the past two decades, several groups have examined the use of microstructured and nanostructured diamond coatings for cardiovascular, dental, and orthopaedic applications. Diamond exhibits exceptional biological, chemical and mechanical properties that make it an ideal interface between medical devices and the body. Ultrananocrystalline diamond and nanocrystalline diamond films have been grown using microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition on ceramic and metallic substrates. In vitro studies of interactions between diamond coatings and medically-relevant cells will be discussed. Recent advances involving the use of diamond coatings for medical applications will be considered.
