Preparation of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Bioactive Material with Containerless Processing

Abstract
02-063 qin li li, q.(Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences); With the rapid growth of the aging population, bioactive and biodegradable bone grafting materials are demanded [1]. It is extremely valuable to study higher bioactive artificial materials with matched biodegradation and bone regeneration rate. It is also important to trace the degradation products of the grafted biomaterials, in order to evaluate the safety and to elucidate the mechanisms of the biodegradation of the biomaterials. Luminescent labeling of biomaterials is an effective way to analysis the distribution of biomaterials in vitro and in vivo[2]. In this study, Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped bioactive materials were prepared via containerless processing method in an aerodynamic levitation furnace(ALF). The materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the upconversion luminescence, the in vitro bioactivity and biocompatibility were evaluated. The obtained Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped materials showed strong luminescent at 547nm wave- lengh. Observations through SEM and EDS analysis combined with FT-IR analysis confirmed that these materials are bioactive. The cell proliferation assay also indicated that they are biocompatible and nontoxic. This study suggests that up-conversional luminencent labeling may be an effective way to label implantable biomaterials, and luminescent biomaterials prepared by contanerless processing method could be used as a candidate for studying biodegradation of bone implantation materials.
