However, the service time of Y-TZP TBCs is limited due to thermal fatigue, leading to cracking and delamination. One possible route to overcome this problem is to add a second phase with self-healing functionality, such as SiC. The present work deals with the preparation of Y-TZP/Al2O3/SiC feedstocks for suspension plasma spraying in which the eutectic composition is used to prevent the substrate oxidation whereas SiC should provide the self-healing effect. In order to improve the coating performance, the rheological behaviour of the mixtures must be optimized in order to maintain a high stability, a controlled nearly Newtonian behaviour at high shear stresses as those produced in the nozzle of the plasma equipment and a high solids loading as to provide homogeneous, dense and thick coatings. These parameters are studied and the effects on the coating performance and properties are discussed, emphasizing the microstructural issues and the coating uniformity in relation to suspensions rheology and spraying parameters.
