Symposium: Porous and Cellular Ceramics

Scope of the Symposium:
Porous and cellular ceramic materials and components are essential in many applications, including filters, absorbers, catalyst carriers, membranes, heat exchangers, heat storage, sensors and lightweight structural components. Highly porous components possessing various pore and cell architecture in the millimeter to the nanometer range can be obtained based on several processing technologies, including precursor pyrolysis, sacrificial templating, partial sintering, direct foaming, replica of porous structures, extrusion, fiber assemblage and Additive Manufacturing.
In this symposium, we will discuss recent advances in modeling, manufacturing, characterization and applications of cellular and porous ceramics.

Abstracts on the following subjects may be submitted:

  • Advancements in Processing of Porous Ceramics
  • Structure and Properties of Porous Ceramics
  • Modeling of Porous Structures and Properties
  • Characterization of Porous Structures
  • Micro-porous and Meso-porous Ceramics
  • Ceramic Membranes
  • Applications of Porous Ceramics

Paolo Colombo
Paolo Colombo is a professor of Materials Science and Technology at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padova, Padova, Italy. He graduated from the University of Padova with a degree in chemical engineering in 1985. He was an assistant professor at the University of Padova from 1990 to 1998 and then an associate professor at the University of Bologna, until 2005. He is also an adjunct professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of University College London, UK, and a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College (UK). He was a Foreign Scientist at INSA, Lyon, France in 2015, and a DGF Mercator Professor at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany in 2016. He was elected Academician of the World Academy of Ceramics (2006), Academician of the European Academy of Sciences (2016), Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2010), Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (2011) and Fellow of the European Ceramic Society (2017). He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the Pennsylvania State University (1991), the Pfeil Award (2007), the Global Star Award (2010), the Edward C. Henry Award (2011), the Verulam Medal & Prize (2013) and the Global Ambassador Award (2016). He published more than 230 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 9 book chapters and holds 10 international patents. He is co-editor of a book on cellular ceramics, a book on polymer-derived-ceramics and 11 proceedings books. He is in the editorial board of 11 international scientific journals. Paolo Colombo's research interests include novel processing routes to porous glasses and ceramics (including Additive Manufacturing), the development of ceramic components from preceramic polymers and geopolymers, and the vitrification and reuse of hazardous industrial and natural waste.

Fernando dos Santos Ortega
Fernando S. Ortega is professor of Ceramic Science and Engineering in the Materials Engineering Department, at the FEI University, São Bernardo do Campo, SP State, Brazil, since 2009. He obtained his degrees in Materials Engineering (1994), Master of Materials Engineering (Rheological Behavior of Suspensions, 1997), and Doctor of Materials Science and Engineering (Gelcasting of Ceramic Foams, 2001) from the Department of Materials Engineering at Federal University of São Carlos (DEMa-UFSCar). Before the current position, he was member of the Institute for Research and Development (IP&D) and assistant professor at the University of  Vale do Paraíba (Univap) (2001-2008). In FEI University, he is member of the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering (since 2009) in the area of Materials and Processing. Fernando is member of the Board of Directors of Brazilian Ceramic Society (2016-2017) and he was the Chairman of the 59th Brazilian Congress of Ceramics (2015). His main research interests are related to colloidal processing of ceramics, including porous/cellular ceramics and rheological behaviour of suspensions.
