Symposium: Education in Ceramics

Scope of the Symposium:
The Education in Ceramics Symposium will be an international forum for presentation and discussion of multidisciplinary themes concerned to theory and practice of teaching ceramics and related areas, from technical schools, undergraduate and graduate courses. It will be a great opportunity to discuss problems, challenges or initiatives and identifying solutions pertinent to ceramics education, that could benefit students, educators, and the public knowledge of ceramics, promoting development and innovation in the ceramics courses. This Symposium could improve the discussion about learning strategies, critical thinking, values and citizenship, objectives implicit in education towards sustainable development, as the slogan of ICC7 is “ Ceramizing the Future for a Sustainable Society”.

Abstracts on the following subjects may be submitted:

• Promoting multi-disciplinary initiatives in education in ceramics - impact on curriculum, curriculum development
• Distance learning: methods, technologies and assessment
• Innovative uses of technology in the classroom, open and online education
• Student recruitment and retention methods, attractiveness of ceramics education
• Team projects, case studies and researches challenges (undergraduate or graduate experiences)
• Preparing graduates for industry
• Partnerships with industry and government, university-business cooperation
• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) initiatives
• Evaluation strategies (professors and students)
• Transition to graduate studies, recruiting methods to attract graduate students
• Sustainability, environmental and ceramics education
• Skills and ceramics education
• Continuing ceramics education and lifelong learning
• Skills for integrating issues of sustainability into ceramics subjects and classroom topics

Organizers information:

Dr. Renata Ayres Rocha
Prof. Dr. Renata Ayres Rocha graduated in Materials Engineering (Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Brazil) in 1999 and completed his Ph.D in 2005 (University of São Paulo, Brazil), studying synthesis of oxide ceramic materials, and the relation between powder characteristics and properties. Dr. R. A. Rocha is an Assistant Professor at Center for Engineering, Modeling and Applied Social Sciences (CECS) at Federal University of ABC (UFABC, Brazil), Professor in the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering also at UFABC and a member of Brazilian Materials Research Society (Brazil-MRS) and of the Council of Brazilian Ceramic Society (ABCeram). She was a post-doc fellow of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in France at the University of Grenoble Alpes (2006-2007) and in Brazil at the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN) (2008-2009), focused on chemical synthesis of oxide ceramic materials for energy and environment, which is her current research interest. At Federal University of ABC since 2010, she was the coordinator of Materials Engineering Undergraduate Course (2013-2015), and she is involved with strategies related to materials engineering education, mainly ceramic materials.

Asst. Prof. Andraž Kocjan
Andraž Kocjan has graduated from Chemical Engineering at Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2005. In 2010 he attained his PhD in Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies at Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School; the title of the thesis was The hydrolysis of AlN powder and its use for the synthesis of nanostructured alumina coatings. During his postdoctoral stay (2011-2013) at the Division of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden, he received and successfully executed a JECS Trust Frontiers of Research funded project entitled Improved Reliability of Translucent Dental Zirconia and Alumina Ceramics. He is now employed as a Scientific associate (Senior researcher) at the Department for Nanostructured Materials, Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he is a leader of the national research programme Engineering and bio-ceramics. Andraž Kocjan is Assistant Professor at Jožef Stefan Postgraduate School and a lecturer at Medical Faculty and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana. He is a member of Science on the Street, a project devoted to the promotion of science in Slovenia. He is a member of European Ceramic Society (ECERS), a committee member of Young Ceramists Network (ECERS, JECS Trust) and was recently appointed as ECERS` chairperson of Young Ceramists and Training working group.
